Killing a lion, in the tradition of the Maasai tribe, bestowed honor and prestige on the young warrior. The warrior saved the precious cattle from slaughter, the family and village from danger, and proved a man had a hero's heart. In today's Kenya, the Maasai do not kill lions, but great threats, greater than the lions of the past, prowl their ancient countryside. These modern lions are the shrinking lands and poverty, untreated disease, and lack of education.
We at ELAND are looking for those around the world with a hero's heart. Though they may not be from the Maasai, they share with us a great respect for a culture-rich people, and a great compassion to preserve and protect a people from harm and destruction. We are working every day to find those who love and those who care to help us equip the Maasai with the tools to overcome these modern lions of ignorance, disease, and poverty.
Who We Are
Born of Maasai Community Members, ELAND is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We develop vital projects for Maasai communities and their neighbors to meet the urgent educational, health, and economic needs facing them in Kenya today.
Our Mission
To develop and implement educational, health, and economic opportunities for Maasai communities and their neighbors through the exchange of ideas, skills and sharing of experiences.
Our Vision
We envision a just, progressive and self-sustaining community for the Maasai people.
Our Primary Objective - Education
Education transforms lives. Education raises children out of poverty, and creates a future of men and women who can thrive in the modern world, even if clothed in the traditions of the ancients. Education, then, is ELAND's most urgent priority for the people of the Maasai.
